Life update And Isolation

21 April 2020

Hello!

So, I have a couple of other posts in the works at the moment but I've been struggling with writing them. It's not because I don't want to or that I'm not excited about them, it's just that I'm not in the right headspace at the moment.

A few things happened since the last time we talked.
In my last post, about Monkey World Ape Rescue Centre, I opened up by talking about having a catch up post in the 'near future'. Here I am, 8 months later to finally tell you what's been going on.

I passed my driving test! Back in 2018, I began to take my driving lessons in secret. I was travelling back and forth at the time to support another shop on Sundays and in that time, I took my driving theory test, and passed, and then began my lessons. On November 19th 2018 I took my test and I passed with only 2 minors. Two days later, I put a deposit on my car, and the following day, I picked her up and went straight on the motorway to go to work. She's a Citreon C1 and her name is Alien, on account of her rev counter resembling an antenna.

Finally passing the test was such a huge deal for me. I began my lessons when I was 17, and in that time, I took 2 theory tests and about 5/6 driving tests. It wasn't that I couldn't drive, it was just that my anxiety often got too much for me and I panicked in the middle of the test, getting 1 major and very few minors, It was heartbreaking.

A month later, in December 2018, I got a new job as a supervisor at the Edinburgh Woollen Mill, and said goodbye at last to Trespass. I really enjoyed the challenge of selling a new mix of items, from curtains to the technical aspects of some of the clothing.

In March 2019, I took another major life change. I got myself a new flat! I've moved into the Glasgow area and I now live alone. Its been really tough, but having my own space has been amazing for me - mostly because I have so much stuff so it's nice to have places to put things. A year on, and I am still cluttered but I just need some shelving up and that should help a little. I'm also lucky to have a pretty decent landlord!

At the end of 2019, I filmed... something. Keep an eye out for a post on that!

In January 2020, I decided to take a leap and go back to university! I'm currently a student studying an MSc in Digital Marketing! I know, I know, I said I wouldn't go back to uni, but this has undoubtely been one of my best decisions. I've made some amazing new friends; from France, Spain, China, India etc and it's given me back a social life that I've been struggling with for the last few years. In addition, it's helped to boost my creativity that I thought I lost years ago!

Those are the positive things. But recently, things have started getting a bit down again.

In March, after my birthday, I was made redundant as I had been at EWM for less than 2 years and the business was closing due to the coronavirus pandemic. My university also switched to online teaching, which was pretty interesting, and easy given that it's a digital degree, but I lost my socialising.

I'm not dealing with it particularly well. I began by having daily video calls with Jasmine and Chantel. I'd get up and get changed every day. I'd be job hunting, and keeping on top of my laundry and tidying. But now, 3 weeks on, I'm really starting to struggle. I've been spending most of my time sleeping. I'm not really getting changed out my PJs. I've been slipping in my course work, which is due very soon. I've began to feel really sad. I go out once a week, twice if I need to get shopping. I've began getting introvert fatigue through simple messages and I'm just really anxious about everything.

I'm trying to stay positive. I'm worried about so much. I'm worried about catching coronavirus, about spreading the virus unknowingly. I'm worried about my university work, though I'm grateful that I'm not doing my dissertation this year so won't have any work until after summer. But most of all, I'm really worried about my finances.

But I'm working on it. I'll be okay.

And that's been my life update.

How are you all keeping? I hope you're all well!

Until next time, be excellent to each other.

  1. Congrats on starting your MSc in Digital Marketing! My flatmate has just finished hers (in the same subject as yours), and I've just finished my MA in Archaeology. Venturing into the graduate world right now is pretty scary!

Hopefully your course going online works out well, but I totally understand missing the social aspect of uni. I feel like we're both in the same mindset - trying to stay positive, but worrying about the virus and money. Wishing you all the best Gail!
